Jewelry Gift Guide: Gold & Silver Pieces for Her and for Him (2026)

Table of Contents

The safest jewelry gift is the one that fits the person, the budget and the size. This guide covers gold and silver pieces for her and for him, with 2026 delivery times for both lines. Here is what I tell every customer: confirm the size before you fall for the style.

Gold ships free to the US, with delivery in 5–7 business days after it ships. Silver ships free worldwide, with US delivery in 7–14 business days after it ships. For more, read how to buy silver jewelry safely, the men’s silver jewelry guide and the women’s jewelry guide.

In my ten years at José Lux, I have learned to ask about size first. A ring that doesn’t fit is a gift nobody can wear. José Lux is a handmade jewelry workshop in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We make 925 sterling silver, 10K gold and 14K gold jewelry by hand, set it with GRA-certified Moissanite from Hong Kong and Swiss CZ, and sell it direct. GRA (Gemological Research Association) issues a certificate for each Moissanite. I am José (Tuấn Anh), a bench jeweler (the person who sets, polishes and inspects at a workbench). Last updated October 2026.

What makes a jewelry gift the right one?

A right gift fits four things: the person, the budget, the size and the date. Get all four and the gift gets worn. Miss one and it stays in a drawer. The sections below follow that order, so you can stop as soon as you have what you need.

Who is it for, and what do they already wear?

Look at what they wear every day, then match the metal color. If they wear yellow gold, choose gold. If they wear bright white jewelry, choose silver. If they wear none, choose one small, low-risk piece.

Sort the person into one of three groups:

  • 1. Wears gold: match the color, then pick by budget.
  • 2. Wears silver: stay with silver, then pick by piece.
  • 3. Wears none: start with one plain piece they can ignore until they like it.

Look for three clues: the band of a watch, the chain around the neck, and any ring they never take off. Together they show metal color and weight. Then ask when they take jewelry off. Someone who removes everything at the gym or in the kitchen needs a sturdier piece than someone who sleeps in a chain. If you can’t see any of this, ask a friend. Do not guess from gender or occasion. Taste varies more than either one.

How much should I spend, and what does each budget buy?

Pick your band first, then the metal. Four bands cover most gifts, from a small gesture to a major milestone. Silver and gold sit in separate columns because they cost different amounts. The prices below are in USD. Each range is the lowest and highest price in that collection on our price list, and each pick sits in the band where its collection starts.

Band Silver pick (silver line) Gold pick (gold line) Best for
1. Up to $140 Women’s earrings ($65–$110), rings ($79–$110), necklaces ($89–$120) and bracelets ($70–$130); men’s earrings ($59–$110); men’s bracelets ($140–$350) None: gold starts at $290 A small gesture
2. $141–$349 Men’s rings ($150–$204) and necklaces ($190–$230) Women’s rings ($290–$780); men’s earrings ($293–$671) Everyday wear
3. $350–$699 None: silver tops out at $350 Women’s earrings ($350–$600), necklaces ($400–$600) and bracelets ($490–$590); men’s bracelets ($640–$950) and rings ($690–$2,300) A close partner
4. $700 and up None: silver tops out at $350 Men’s necklaces ($700–$1,300) A milestone

Here is how I read the four bands, from smallest to largest:

  • 1. Band 1 buys silver only: every women’s silver collection, men’s earrings and the start of men’s bracelets. Choose earrings or a pendant that need no fitting.
  • 2. Band 2 buys men’s silver rings and chains, and the first gold pieces. Spend your effort on the size, not on the style.
  • 3. Band 3 is where most gold begins. Check the stone type and the certificate before you pay, and read the stone section below.
  • 4. Band 4 starts with men’s gold necklaces at $700. Order early, because a larger piece leaves less room for a size mistake.

If you sit between two bands, take the lower one. Put the saved money into getting the size right, not into a bigger stone. We sell direct, with factory-direct pricing on a 10% margin. Write your band down before you browse. A fixed number stops you from drifting upward one tempting piece at a time. Buy the piece to be worn. Our silver buying guide explains what a fair silver price looks like.

Gold or silver: which line fits the person I’m buying for?

Both are solid choices for different people. Silver suits a lighter budget and a bright white look. Gold suits someone who wants a solid precious-metal piece. Neither line is better. Both come from the same workshop, the same bench jewelers and the same three-stage inspection.

Item Silver line Gold line
Purity 925 sterling silver: 92.5% pure silver 10K gold: 41.7% pure gold. 14K gold: 58.3% pure gold
Color Rhodium Plated White Gold Finish Yellow Gold, Rose Gold or White Gold, from the alloy formula
Purity test XRF test on every batch XRF test checks the karat
Suits A lighter budget, a bright white look A solid precious-metal piece

A hallmark is a stamp that records the metal’s purity. An XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyzer scans the metal and reads what it contains. So we test purity instead of trusting a stamp alone. The sterling silver guide covers 925 sterling silver in depth.

Each line has one honest trade-off. Silver carries a finish that wears down, and we re-plate it free. Gold ships free to the United States only. Weigh those two facts before you choose, and read the durability and delivery sections below.

What are Moissanite and Swiss CZ, and how do they differ?

Moissanite is lab-created silicon carbide, a gemstone in its own right. Swiss CZ is lab-created zirconium dioxide. Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs scale, which ranks scratch resistance from 1 to 10. Swiss CZ rates 8–8.5. Diamond rates 10. I compare these stones on measured properties only. Both are lab-created, so neither is mined. Dispersion measures how strongly a stone splits light into colors. Neither number tells you how a stone looks on a hand, so judge that from the photo below.

Property Moissanite Swiss CZ
Dispersion (fire) 0.104 (diamond: 0.044) 0.066
Proof of material GRA certificate Material authentication card

Our Moissanite is imported from Hong Kong and graded Color D-FL: colorless, and internally flawless under 10x magnification. On our gold rings, Moissanite is the center stone, and several of our gold necklaces carry Swiss CZ accents. On silver, either stone can be the main stone on lower-priced pieces. Our bench jewelers hand-set each Moissanite in 15–20 minutes. Hand-setting means placing and securing each stone by hand at the bench. Our Moissanite quality and certification guide explains how Moissanite is graded.

10K or 14K gold: how do they differ?

10K gold: 58.3% against 41.7%. 10K gold carries more alloy metal. Both are solid gold. I do not rank them, because the right choice depends on budget and daily wear.

  • 10K gold: 41.7% pure gold, 58.3% alloy metals.
  • 14K gold: 58.3% pure gold, 41.7% alloy metals.

Karat measures gold purity out of 24. Choose by budget and daily wear. Ask one question: will they wear it every day? Everyday wear scratches any metal, so I would not pick a karat on the number alone.

What should I buy her?

Group the picks by piece: ring, necklace, earrings or bracelet. The safest pick for an unsure buyer is a pendant necklace or a pair of earrings, because neither needs a ring size. Silver comes first below, then gold.

Which silver pieces suit her? (Silver line)

Pick a necklace or earrings first, then a bracelet, then a ring. That order runs from lowest to highest sizing risk. Every silver piece is made of 925 sterling silver and finished with the Rhodium Plated White Gold Finish. Silver ships free worldwide.

Piece Best for
Women’s silver necklaces The safest pick
Women’s silver earrings A gift with no fitting
Women’s silver bracelets Someone who wears bracelets daily
Women’s silver rings A partner whose size you know

Match the metal color to what she already wears. Skip the ring unless you have her size. Check the clasp on a necklace or bracelet before you order. Then ask whether she wears pieces to sleep, to the gym or only out. The wear range in the durability section assumes normal daily wear. We adjust every women’s bracelet to your wrist size. For earrings, state single or pair. Silver tarnishes with time, and the finish wears, so tell her the finish can be redone free.

Which gold pieces suit her? (Gold line)

Pick a necklace or earrings first here too. Each gold piece is made of solid 10K gold or solid 14K gold. Our gold rings carry GRA-certified Moissanite, and several gold necklaces carry Swiss CZ accents. Gold ships free to the United States, with delivery in 5–7 business days after it ships.

Piece Best for Size you need
Women’s Gold Necklace (with a pendant) The safest pick Chain length, in inches and cm
Gold earrings A gift with no fitting Single or pair; pierced ears
Gold bracelet Someone who wears bracelets daily Wrist size; we adjust it
Gold ring A partner whose size you know US ring size, EU size beside it

Our catalog lists Yellow Gold, Rose Gold and White Gold pieces. The color comes from the alloy formula, so nothing plated wears off. Every gold necklace we list is an 18 in (45.7 cm) chain. Match the color to what she wears. Choose gold when she wants one piece for every day. Gold costs more than silver at the same size.

Be straight about two limits. Free gold shipping covers the United States only, so a gift going abroad is better as silver. And a gold ring is the piece where a wrong size costs the most time, because gold takes 6–8 business days to process before it ships. Choose a necklace when in doubt.

What should I buy him?

Start with a chain, a ring, a bracelet or earrings. The safest pick for an unsure buyer is a plain chain, because it needs only a length, not a fitted size. Silver comes first below, then gold.

Which silver pieces suit him? (Silver line)

Choose a chain first, then a bracelet, then a ring. Chains forgive a wrong length better than rings forgive a wrong size. Each silver piece is made of 925 sterling silver and finished with the Rhodium Plated White Gold Finish. Check the width in mm and the length on the product page.

Piece Best for Size you need
Men’s silver necklaces The safest pick Chain length, in inches and cm
Men’s silver bracelets A man who wears a watch Wrist size; our men’s size chart
Men’s silver rings A man whose size you know US ring size, EU size beside it

Our men’s silver Cuban link chain is 5 mm wide and 50 cm (19.7 in) long, with no stone and no pendant. A thin chain disappears under a shirt, and a wide one shows.

Is jewelry still a good gift if he wears none?

Yes, with one low-risk piece. Choose a plain silver chain he can wear under a shirt. A man who wears none may not start because of a gift, so pick something he can ignore. Skip it only if he has told you he wants no jewelry. Then give him something else.

Which gold pieces suit him? (Gold line)

Choose a chain first in gold too. I use two product names, so you know what you get. Men’s Gold Chain means a chain only. Men’s Gold Necklace means a chain with a pendant. Each gold piece is made of solid 10K gold or solid 14K gold.

Piece Best for Size you need
Men’s Gold Chain The safest pick Chain length, in inches and cm
Men’s Gold Necklace (with a pendant) A man who wears a chain already Chain length
Gold bracelet A man who wears bracelets Wrist size; our men’s size chart
Gold ring A man whose size you know Wrist size; our men’s size chart

Our catalog lists these gold chain styles: Cable, Herringbone, Box, Singapore, Bar Link, Valentino and Rolo. They come in 10K gold and 14K gold, in Yellow Gold and White Gold. Check the length and width on each product page. The color comes from the alloy formula. Gold ships free to the United States, with delivery in 5–7 business days after it ships. We do not ship gold outside the US.

What size do I buy without asking?

Start with the ring, because it carries the most risk. Then check chain length and bracelet length. A necklace or earrings skip sizing altogether. If a size is still wrong, the last section here explains what can be done. Size comes before sentiment.

How do I find a ring size without asking?

Use a ring they already wear. Note the finger, then measure the inside width in millimeters. If you can’t borrow one, ask someone close to them. These four methods run from least to most effort:

  • 1. Ask a friend or family member who knows the size.
  • 2. Note which finger wears a ring now, and how snug it feels.
  • 3. Borrow a ring from that finger and measure its inside width in millimeters.
  • 4. Convert it with our finger size chart. Always show the US size with the EU size beside it.

Use a ring from the same finger, not another hand. Measure in the evening, with warm hands. Cold can shrink a finger by up to half a size. If the knuckle is wider than the base of the finger, measure both and choose a size between them. Our finger size chart runs from US size 3 to 13, with the EU size beside it. Here are six common sizes:

US size EU size Finger circumference Inside diameter
5 49 49.3 mm 15.7 mm
6 51.5 51.9 mm 16.5 mm
7 54 54.4 mm 17.3 mm
8 57 57.0 mm 17.3 mm
9 59.5 59.5 mm 17.3 mm
10 62 62.1 mm 19.8 mm

Our guide to how to measure ring size at home walks through each step.

What chain length is safest?

If you don’t know their neck size, start with the standard length on our product pages: 18 in (45.7 cm) on our women’s pendant necklace and 50 cm (19.7 in) on our men’s Cuban link chain. Women’s chains average about 18 in (46 cm), and men’s chains run 20–24 in (51–61 cm). A 22 in (55.9 cm) chain sits at mid-chest. A chain that is too short cannot be lengthened, so when you are unsure, choose the longer length.

Length name Length Where it sits
Choker 14–16 in (35–41 cm) Base of the neck
Princess 17–19 in (43–48 cm) Just below the collarbone
Matinee 20–24 in (51–61 cm) Mid-chest, above the bust line

Our neck and wrist sizing guide shows how to measure.

What bracelet length is safe?

Measure the wrist, then add 0.5 in (1.3 cm) for a lobster clasp (a small spring-loaded hook) or 1 in (2.5 cm) for a toggle clasp (a bar that slips through a ring). If you can’t measure, match a bracelet they already wear. We adjust every women’s bracelet to the wrist size, and our men’s bracelets follow our men’s size chart. A bracelet that is too tight stays in the box.

Wrist Bracelet length Chart
6.0 in (15.2 cm) 6.5 in (16.5 cm) Women’s
7.0 in (17.8 cm) 7.5 in (19.1 cm) Women’s and men’s
8.0 in (20.3 cm) 8.5 in (21.6 cm) Women’s and men’s
9.0 in (22.9 cm) 9.5 in (24.1 cm) Men’s

Our wrist sizing guide shows how to measure.

Can a wrong size be fixed?

Yes, we exchange a piece for another size free of charge. Our finger size chart covers rings, and our wrist size chart covers bracelets. Use the chart before you order, so the exchange stays a safety net, not a plan. Our return and refund policy sets the rules for returns.

  • 1. Find the size with our finger size chart or wrist size chart.
  • 2. If it is wrong, write to Support@joselux.com with your order number.
  • 3. We exchange it for the right size, free of charge.

If you cannot confirm the size, buy earrings or a pendant instead.

Will it last, and what is it made of?

Silver carries a finish that wears down, and gold carries none. Skin response depends on the person, and I can’t promise one. You can check the metal yourself with a hallmark and a certificate. Start with silver.

Silver: will the finish wear off, and what is tarnish?

Yes, the rhodium finish on a silver piece wears down over time, and re-plating restores it. Our Rhodium Plated White Gold Finish is 0.5–1.0 micron thick. The manufacturer rating is up to 3 years of normal daily wear. Our typical customer goes about 5 years before re-plating, and the longest recorded is 8. Re-plating is free under our lifetime warranty (free, for as long as you own the piece) on silver.

At our workshop, each silver piece is plated by hand: surface activation, rhodium bath, distilled rinse, then inspection. It takes 20–30 minutes a piece.

The finish rates Mohs 6. The silver under it rates 2.5–3. Tarnish is silver sulfide (Ag₂S), a dark layer that forms when silver reacts with sulfur in the air. It is chemistry, not a defect. Read why silver tarnishes and turns skin green.

Gold: what wears, and what doesn’t?

Gold has no plating to wear off. Yellow Gold, Rose Gold and White Gold get their color from the alloy formula, the mix of metals blended into the gold. Gold resists tarnish. Everyday wear still scratches any metal, so clean it and check the stones. A push test is gentle pressure on a stone to check that nothing moves.

Here is the trade-off. 10K gold carries more alloy metal than 14K gold, and neither is scratch-proof. Gold needs no re-plating, but it does need a stone check now and then. A hard impact can bend a band or knock out a stone. We review each case and repair it at cost after a quote. If a stone feels loose in normal use, write to Support@joselux.com with your order number. Turnaround is usually 7–14 business days after we receive the piece.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

I can’t promise a piece is right for every skin. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Our White Gold is nickel-free: we alloy it with silver. I will not call any piece hypoallergenic. If a piece causes a reaction, stop wearing it and ask your doctor. I make no other skin claim.

Nickel is a common cause of contact sensitivity, so ask the recipient, or someone close to them, about metals that have bothered them before. That one question beats any label I could print. Our sensitive-skin guide goes further.

How do I check the metal and stones myself?

Check the hallmark and the certificate, not the marketing. Four checks, from easiest to most effort:

  • 1. Read the karat on the product page: 10K gold is 41.7% pure gold, and 14K gold is 58.3%.
  • 2. Find the “925” hallmark stamped inside a silver piece.
  • 3. Ask for the GRA certificate on a Moissanite piece. It carries a unique laser-inscribed ID.
  • 4. Ask for the material authentication card on a Swiss CZ piece.

Behind those checks, the workshop runs an XRF test and a three-stage inspection. That means an artisan self-check, a lead-artisan check under a 20x microscope, and a final sign-off. Our 100-plus artisans average 23 years of experience, and our 2026 rejection rate is 5–6%. Our plating and hallmarks guide explains each stamp. Read more about our workshop and artisans on the About José Lux page.

Will it arrive in time for a 2026 occasion?

Delivery depends on the line. Silver ships worldwide. Gold ships free to the United States only. Both lines ship by USPS, insured for 100% of declared value. Start with silver below, then gold.

Silver: how long does delivery take?

Silver ships free worldwide by USPS. US delivery takes 7–14 business days, and Europe takes 10–15.

Region Business days
United States 7–14
Europe 10–15

Business days skip weekends. Silver is made to order, so add 3–4 business days of processing before it ships. Delivery ranges count from the ship date. Each shipment is insured for 100% of declared value. Customs processing can add time on international orders. Import duties and VAT on orders to Europe are free for you, because we handle them. When the date is fixed, plan on the longer number in the range, not the shorter one.

Gold: how long does delivery take?

Free gold shipping is for the United States only, by USPS. Gold is made to order. Each piece is alloyed, cast and set by hand, so it takes 6–8 business days of processing before it ships. US delivery then takes 5–7 business days. The limit comes from USPS customs and clearance. Read our shipping policy for the details. I will not promise a date I can’t confirm.

We do not ship gold outside the US. If you live outside the US, silver is the line that ships to you, and it ships free.

How do I time the order for the occasion?

Count back from the date. Four steps:

  • 1. Write down the occasion date.
  • 2. Subtract the delivery range for your line and region, in business days, not calendar days.
  • 3. Subtract the processing time: 3–4 business days for silver, 6–8 for gold.
  • 4. Add a buffer of several days.

A silver gift to the United States needs 10–18 business days from order to door, and a silver gift to Europe needs 13–19. A gold gift to the United States needs 11–15. Use these ranges instead of a fixed cutoff date, and add your buffer.

What does the lifetime warranty cover, and what about returns?

Both lines carry a lifetime warranty (free, for as long as you own the piece). The table shows what it covers. Read our warranty policy for the exclusions.

Term Silver Gold
Warranty Lifetime, free Lifetime, free
Band and prong repair Free Free
Re-plating Free Not applicable (no plating)
CZ and Moissanite reset Free Free
Lost Moissanite Charged at the Hong Kong purchase price Replaced free when lost in normal use

Keep the order number with the gift, because a claim starts with it. Our return policy accepts a piece within 14 days of delivery if it is not as described or arrives damaged. The piece must be unused and in its original packaging. Custom-made pieces are non-returnable unless defective, and the customer pays return shipping. We refund in full if an order has not arrived within 25 days.

What else should a first-time giver know before ordering?

A few extras help a first-time buyer: what karat means, which occasions suit which pieces, whether jewelry suits a coworker, and how care differs by line. Skip this part if you have already picked.

What is the difference between karat and carat?

Karat measures gold purity out of 24. Carat measures stone weight. The words sound alike, so I never swap them. A 14K gold chain is not 14 carats, and a one-carat stone says nothing about its metal. Ten parts in 24 is 41.7%, and fourteen parts in 24 is 58.3%.

Which occasions suit which kinds of jewelry?

Match the size of the gesture, not the occasion. Three groups, from smallest to largest:

  • 1. A small gesture: earrings or a pendant. No fitted size, so no risk.
  • 2. An everyday gift: a chain or a band. Check the length or the size first.
  • 3. A major milestone: a Moissanite piece with a certificate. Order early and check the delivery date.

Pick the group by the relationship, not the calendar. A first gift to a new partner sits in group 1. A long-standing partner can sit in group 3. I do not assume who gives or who receives. I add no dates, because the delivery ranges above do the counting.

Is jewelry an appropriate gift for a coworker or a new partner?

For a new partner, yes, if you keep it small. For a coworker, I would not. This is my judgment, not a rule. A small pendant or a pair of earrings keeps a new-partner gift low-risk. Stay in the lowest budget band, and skip rings, because a ring carries meaning and needs a size.

How does caring for silver differ from caring for gold?

Silver needs tarnish care and free re-plating, while gold needs everyday cleaning and stone checks.

Line Care
Silver Wipe off tarnish; when the finish thins, re-plate it free under the lifetime warranty
Gold Clean it; run a push test on stones; no re-plating

Tarnish is a silver topic only, and it wipes off. Gold does not form silver sulfide. Store each piece on its own, so a chain does not scratch a stone. Clean both lines with a soft cloth first, and avoid harsh cleaners.

Quick answers for gift buyers

Here are the six questions I hear most before an order ships. Each answer stands on its own.

Can I engrave or personalize the piece?

Yes, we engrave a name or a date free of charge on request. If you don’t ask for one, we engrave “LUX”, our brand mark. We do not offer birthstone options. Write your wording and the piece name to Support@joselux.com before you order. Custom-made pieces are non-returnable unless defective, so settle the wording first.

Does gold ship to Europe?

No. We ship gold to the United States only, by USPS, because of USPS customs and clearance. Our 10K and 14K gold ships free to the US, with delivery in 5–7 business days after it ships. Silver ships free worldwide, so choose silver for a gift going to Europe.

Which pieces are the safest gifts when I don’t know the size?

Earrings and pendant necklaces. Neither needs a fitted size, so you avoid the biggest risk. State single or pair for earrings, and pick a chain length from the table above. Leave rings for last, because a ring is the hardest size to guess, and bracelets come next.

Is White Gold the same as the rhodium finish on silver?

No. White Gold gets its color from the alloy formula: gold alloyed with silver. The Rhodium Plated White Gold Finish is a thin plating on silver pieces only. One is metal color. The other is a surface layer that wears and can be redone.

What is a GRA certificate, and does the gift include one?

A GRA certificate is a Moissanite report with a unique laser-inscribed ID. It comes with each Moissanite piece. It covers Moissanite only, so Swiss CZ comes with a material authentication card instead. It is never a diamond report. We import our Moissanite from a stone workshop in Hong Kong.

Can I return it if they don’t like it?

Only if it is not as described or arrives damaged, within 14 days of delivery. The policy does not list returns for a change of mind. The piece must be unused and in its original packaging, and the customer pays return shipping. Every piece is made to order, so confirm the size at Support@joselux.com first.

What makes a jewelry gift go wrong, and how do I avoid it?

It goes wrong in five ways, in the order you meet them:

  • 1. Wrong person: reread what they wear.
  • 2. Wrong budget: pick your band first.
  • 3. Wrong size: confirm it before the style.
  • 4. Wrong date: count back in business days.
  • 5. Unchecked material: check the hallmark and the certificate.

A right gift fits all five. For more, visit the José Lux home page.
