José Lux has been working silver for over a decade. This engraved huggie hoop is one of the most craft-intensive pieces we make — the outer face is hand-engraved, then oxidized by our artisans in Vietnam to produce the signature black-and-white contrast that no machine process replicates.

This is sold as one earring. Most men wear a single huggie. The price is for one piece. If you want two, order two.

The Engraving — Hand-Cut Pattern, Oxidized Contrast

The outer face of this huggie is fully engraved. The pattern is cut directly into the sterling silver by hand at our Vietnam workshop. Every line in the design is made by a skilled bench jeweler — not stamped, not laser-etched, not machine-pressed.

Hand-engraving on a curved, hinged surface is demanding work. The band has to stay perfectly round while the tool cuts through it. The depth of each line has to be consistent across the full arc so the oxidation reads evenly. Our artisans have been cutting this work for years. That experience is what makes the contrast clean rather than muddy.

After engraving, the piece goes through hand-oxidation. Oxidation is a controlled chemical process — the silver is treated to blacken the recessed cuts while the raised surfaces are polished back to bright silver. The result is a pattern in two tones: deep black in the grooves, clean white metal on the high points. Classic, masculine, and unmistakably handmade.

No two pieces are identical. The hand work means each earring carries its own character. That is by design.

The Oxidized Finish — Black & Silver, Made by Hand

Oxidized silver is not painted or coated. The black color is produced by controlled oxidation — a chemical reaction that converts the outer layer of silver into silver sulfide. Done by hand, the artisan applies the oxidizing agent selectively, lets it develop to the right depth, then polishes the high surfaces back to bare metal.

This process requires a skilled hand at every stage. Too much oxidation and the piece loses the contrast. Too little and the engraving disappears. The timing, the polishing pressure, the surface preparation — none of this is automated. José Lux has artisans who have been doing this work for years. The black-and-white finish on this earring is the result of that experience, not a formula.

Oxidized silver does not fade the way plating does. Rhodium plating sits on top of the metal — it wears down with time and needs re-applying. Oxidation is different. The black color is not a layer on the surface. It is the silver itself, chemically converted into silver sulfide. That conversion does not reverse under normal wear. It does not peel. It does not rub off. The black stays black for the life of the earring — no re-oxidation needed, no restoration service, no maintenance schedule. Buy it once. Wear it for life.

This finish produces a piece that looks like it belongs in a private collection from another era. Independent. Personal. Not available from a machine.

The Band and Hinge Clasp

The band is a solid huggie hoop — wide enough to carry the engraved pattern without crowding, designed to sit close against the earlobe. The hoop closes with an integrated hinge at the top and a click-lock clasp at the base.

The hinge is built into the body of the earring. It opens and closes with a firm click. The two halves of the hoop meet precisely at the base and lock without play or rattle. Once closed, the earring holds its position against the ear without shifting. The clasp does not open accidentally during wear, exercise, or sleep.

The hinge mechanism is handmade and fully openable for cleaning. Open the clasp, remove the earring, clean the inner surface and the hinge point, close it. That is the full cleaning sequence. The mechanism is built to be operated daily for years without failure.

If the hinge develops a fault under normal use, José Lux repairs it free of charge.

The inner surface of the band is smooth, polished silver. No engraving or rough edges on the inside face. It sits flat against the earlobe without catching or irritating.

The Clasp — Solid, Openable, Fully Cleanable

The huggie closes with an integrated hinged clasp at the base of the hoop. The clasp snaps shut with a firm, audible click and does not release without deliberate pressure on both sides. It does not open accidentally during wear, exercise, or sleep.

The clasp is designed to be opened fully. This matters for cleaning. Unclip the earring, open the hoop, clean the hinge point and inner band surface, close and reclip. The mechanism is fully accessible — nothing is sealed or inaccessible. For an earring worn daily, the ability to clean every surface is not optional. We built it that way.

The clasp components are 925 sterling silver throughout. No coated brass. No plated alloy at the contact points. The metal touching your ear is the same material as the rest of the earring.

The Metal — 925 Sterling Silver, Hand-Oxidized

The band, hinge, clasp, and inner surface are 925 sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver, 7.5% copper for structural rigidity. Sterling silver is the correct metal for an engraved piece: soft enough to cut cleanly, hard enough to hold the line definition after oxidation.

Every earring is engraved by hand, then oxidized by hand at our workshop in Vietnam. The artisans doing this work have been finishing silver for years. Hand oxidation gives more even, controlled color depth on curved surfaces and in the narrow cuts of the engraving — the points where chemical dipping produces uneven results.

The hand-oxidation process José Lux uses is permanent. The silver sulfide conversion goes into the metal — it does not sit on top waiting to wear off. The classic black-and-silver contrast you see on day one is the same contrast you will see in ten years. No upkeep. No re-treatment. No restoration required.

Warranty and Repairs

Every hinge is opened and closed under load before this earring ships. Every clasp is tested. Every engraved face is inspected under magnification before the piece is boxed.

If the hinge or clasp mechanism fails under normal daily use — no drops, no hard impacts — José Lux repairs it free of charge.

The hand-oxidized finish requires no re-treatment. Ever. It is not a plating service. It is not on a maintenance schedule. The finish is permanent by the nature of the process.

What is not covered: visible deformation from a drop or hard impact — bent hinge, cracked band, distorted shape from a fall. José Lux inspects every case individually and tells you honestly what we see. If a repair falls outside the warranty, we quote the cost clearly before any work is done.

Shipping

Free via USPS to the United States and Europe. Tracking sent the day your order ships. Estimated delivery 7–14 business days. European orders can see customs delays — José Lux states that honestly rather than promise a window we cannot control.

Every shipment is 100% insured. If something goes wrong in transit — lost, delayed, or damaged — you're covered in full. Even if an incorrect address was entered at checkout, a full refund is issued. You either receive your earring in perfect condition or you get your money back.

Your earring ships in two layers: the inner box holds the piece securely with anti-shock protection; the outer box protects everything in transit.

Our Workshop

Our workshop is in Vietnam. The artisans who hand-engrave your silver, apply the oxidation by hand, and test every clasp have been doing this work for years. Every engraving line is cut by a bench jeweler. Every hinge is opened and closed under load before the earring ships. Every piece is finished by hand.

A hand-engraved, hand-oxidized huggie looks simple. Getting the pattern to sit level on a curved surface, keeping the oxidation depth consistent across the full arc, maintaining hinge function after finishing — none of that happens by machine. It is bench work. Done correctly, on every piece, every time. We have been doing it long enough to know exactly where cheaper versions of this design fail. Ours don't, because the work is done right from the start.

Your Earring Arrives Protected — Two-Layer Box, USPS Insured

Your earring ships in two layers of packaging. The inner jewelry box holds the piece securely in position. The outer box takes the transit damage so the inner box doesn't have to. Before it goes into the box, the earring itself is wrapped in a shock-absorbing layer — no movement, no contact, nothing shifts from our workshop to your door.

Shipping is via USPS with 100% insurance on every order. If something goes wrong in transit — lost, delayed, or damaged — we cover it in full. If an incorrect address was entered at checkout, José Lux refunds you completely. You either receive your earring in perfect condition, or you get your money back. That is the José Lux standard.

FAQ

This is listed as one earring. Can I order two?

Yes. Add two to your cart. We list it as one earring because that is how most men wear it — one ear. Forcing you to buy a pair when you want a single is a common industry practice. We don't do it.

What does 'hand-oxidized' mean?

Oxidation is a controlled chemical process that converts the surface layer of silver into silver sulfide — which appears black. Our artisans apply it selectively to the engraved cuts, let it develop to the right depth, then polish the raised surfaces back to bright bare metal. The result is the black-and-silver contrast you see on the outer face. Every step is done by hand. No machine produces this finish consistently on an engraved surface.

Will the black oxidized finish fade or wear off?

No. The black is not paint. It is not a coating. It is the silver itself, chemically converted into silver sulfide through the hand-oxidation process. That conversion is permanent — it does not reverse under daily wear, does not peel, does not rub off over time. The black-and-silver contrast on this earring on day one is the same contrast you will see in ten years. No re-treatment. No restoration. No maintenance required. Ever.

How does the huggie clasp open and close?

The hinge sits at the top of the hoop. The clasp snaps shut at the base with a firm click. To open, apply deliberate pressure to both sides of the clasp simultaneously — it releases cleanly. To close, press the two halves together until you feel and hear the click. It does not open accidentally. The mechanism is tested before every earring ships.

Can I clean this earring properly?

Yes. Open the clasp, remove the earring from your ear, and clean every surface including the inner band and the hinge point. The huggie is fully openable — nothing is sealed. For the engraved outer face, use a soft brush with mild soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Dry fully before wearing. Avoid alcohol, bleach, or harsh chemicals — these can affect the oxidized finish. The care cloth included with your order keeps the bright silver surfaces clean.

What does the warranty cover?

Hinge and clasp repair under normal daily use is always free. What is not covered: visible deformation from a drop or hard impact. José Lux inspects every case individually. If a repair falls outside the warranty, we give you a clear quote before any work is done.

How does shipping work?

Free USPS to the United States and Europe. Tracking sent the day your order ships. Estimated 7–14 business days. European orders can see customs delays — José Lux states that honestly rather than promise a window we cannot control. Every shipment is 100% insured. If something goes wrong in transit for any reason, including an incorrect delivery address, a full refund is issued.

Where is this earring made?

Handmade at the José Lux workshop in Vietnam. The artisans who hand-engrave your silver, apply the oxidation, and test every clasp have been doing this work for years — longer than most jewelry brands have been selling online. Every line in the engraving is cut by hand. Every piece is oxidized by hand. Every hinge is tested before shipment. This is José Lux's own workshop, not a third-party factory. The origin is not a footnote — it is why the craft holds.
