The Rolo Link — and the Bar Stations

A Rolo chain is built from round links of one size, each joined to the next. Because every link matches, the chain moves smoothly and hangs the same way all the way around the neck. At set points along the chain, a faceted bar station replaces a few round links. Each bar carries a cut pattern on its face, and that pattern catches light differently from the smooth round links beside it.

A pattern like this only works if the spacing holds. José Lux sets the link size and the position of every bar in the design, then forms each link to that spec. We join the round links, set each bar station into the chain, fit the clasp, and polish the whole piece in several stages at the bench, to a mirror finish. Because the round links are formed to the same spec, the bar stations sit where the design puts them along the full 21.7 in (55 cm).

The Clasp — Fitted by Hand

You handle the clasp every day, so it has to open easily and close securely. This chain uses a spring ring clasp, made and fitted by hand at the José Lux workshop. Pull the small tab to open the gate, hook the ring, and let go. The spring snaps the gate shut.

It opens and re-fastens as many times as you need, and the gate seats firmly each time. We check every clasp by hand before the chain ships. If a clasp ever fails, the repair is free, for life.

The chain is solid gold — never gold-filled, never gold-plated. It's 14K gold — 58.3% pure gold. Here's the trade-off in plain terms: 14K carries more pure gold than 10K gold — 41.7% pure gold — so it costs more per gram. 10K is the harder of the two against daily scratches.
